Subject: Some challenge grant
guidance
Colleagues, with the
help of Bill Perlstein and Tonia Lambert, we have a bit of guidance regarding
challenge grants.
First, Bill summarized
key aspects of the modified submission process by pasting in this
table.
Second, Bill asked two
questions:
1.
Do we need to provide a detailed budget?
With regard to budget,
here is what Tonia has identified (and it concurs with my
read):
“Per the guidelines,
required components include the Research & Related Budget, which is the
detailed budget. Since this is a required component, and an option for
modular isn’t given, my interpretation of the guidance is a FULL budget and FULL
justification, for any amount up to the $500K per
year.
I also interpret that
all other PHS guideline are still in place, with the exception of specific
components outlined in the RFA. I did notice that biosketches are limited
to 2 pages and no appendix materials are
permitted.”
==========
2.
I am unsure what kinds of headings to use for the Research Design and Methods
section. This seems to be quite different from what I’m used to. How are you
handling this? For example, are you simply providing the headings specified in
item 5?
With regard to layout,
here is what a proposed as a rough heuristic to Bill for what I am planning to
do in MY challenge grant:
“Specific Aims – 1
page, as usual, but maybe with a bit more background/preliminary/investigator
track record info snuck in than usual, albeit in just a few
sentences
Background and
Significance – omit
Preliminary Studies –
omit
Research Design and
Methods
a.
Statement of the Challenge Area and Specific Challenge Topic (0.5 pages, may
include some “track record” material)
b.
The Challenge and potential impact (1 page, will include some background and
preliminary studies here)
c.
The Approach (10 pages)
a.
Participants, incl. power analysis (1 page)
b.
Measures, incl. justification (1 page)
c.
Design/Procedure/Interventions (7 pages)
d.
Analyses (1 page)
d.
Timeline and Milestones (0.5 pages)”
==========
Finally, for additional
guidance, it may be useful to visit one of Dr. Stacpoole’s
workshops:
“Faculty -
Due to limited
availability, Dr. Stacpoole is willing to host two
separate
meetings to discuss the
NIH stimulus. These meetings will be held on
Thursday, March 19 at
8am and Tuesday, March 24 at 1pm. Both meetings will
be
held in N1-16, the CTSI
conference room. Please let me know which meeting
you
will
attend.
