Research

All abstracts are due on or before Friday, February 29th (by 5:00 pm). Please submit one original and three copies of each abstract to Ms. Tonia Lambert in the PHHP Research Office, 4th Floor HPNP, Room 4112. In addition, please email an electronic copy of the submission to tlambert@phhp.ufl.edu.

Page 1 (Title and Authors) - Titles should not exceed 75 characters, including punctuation and spacing. Avoid abbreviations in the title and in the abstract. Give full names, highest academic degrees, and institutional affiliations of all authors. Designate a corresponding author and their department, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Include a signature line for the Applicant and the Faculty Mentor. Use Arial 11 Font. Due to space constraints, we are limiting abstract submissions to graduate students and undergraduate Honors Thesis students. Postdoctoral fellows and interns are not eligible for participation. Only one abstract per eligible student (as lead author) will be allowed.

Page 2 (Title and Abstract) - Repeat the title on the top this page but do not include the authors. Provide a structured abstract of no more than 300 words consisting of 4 paragraphs labeled: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Use Arial 11 font. Be sure to define any abbreviations and to avoid the use of technical jargon. Give special attention to clarity of communication. It is important that the abstract be easily understood by someone outside of your discipline.

Use the following information as a guide for what to include in each of the 4 paragraphs:

Background – Key questions or issues addressed, objective, hypothesis.
Methods – Participants, measures, procedures, design, and analyses (Be sure to specify both the type of research design employed (e.g., observational study, randomized controlled trial, etc). and the specific statistical tests employed (e.g., analysis of variance, hierarchical multiple regression, etc.)
Results – Study findings and the results of statistical testing. (Specify the statistical tests employed (e.g., analysis of variance, hierarchical multiple regression, etc.)
Conclusion – Implications for research, clinical care, public health, or education.

For investigations of human or animal participants, state in the "Methods" section that the appropriate institutional review board or institutional animal use and care committee has approved the project

Deadline
The deadline for RECEIPT of abstracts is 5 p.m., February 29, 2008. Notification of awards will be made at the PHHP Research Day on April 3rd, 2008.

Abstracts must follow the format requirements to be eligible for consideration (margins, spacing, font, etc.). Eligible posters must present work done at UF labs and under UF faculty mentorship and the PHHP faculty mentor must be listed as a co-author on the poster. We will accept only one abstract submission per eligible student as first author so faculty and students should work together to determine the best possible choice for submission.

Review Process: Volunteer faculty members will review the proposals.

The College of Public Health and Health Professions (PHHP) announces its annual competition for funding to support graduate student research. Graduate students currently enrolled in degree-granting programs within the College of PHHP who are in good standing are eligible to apply. PHHP graduate student research grants may be used to support research required for the masters or doctoral degree or for other research studies for which the graduate student serves as the principal investigator. Proposed projects must be conducted under the auspices a PHHP faculty mentor who will ensure compliance with human subject or animal use standards. Undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for participation. Only one application per eligible student will be allowed.

Proposal Guidelines
The proposal should consist of the following materials:

Cover Page – Include a project title (avoid abbreviations and limit the title < 75 characters). Include a signature line for the Applicant and the Faculty Mentor. Use full names and include email addresses as well the name of the student’s program and department. Indicate whether human or animal subjects will be used and whether IRB or IACUC approval will be required.

Research Plan – This section should not exceed 600 words (not including references). Please double space and use Arial 11 font. Please include the following subsections: (a) Specific Aims (hypothesis), (b) Background (significance), (c) Methods (participants, measures, procedures, design, analysis plan, limitations, and project timeline) and (d) Literature cited. Be sure to define any abbreviations and to avoid the use of technical jargon. Give special attention to clarity of communication. It is important that the abstract be easily understood by someone outside of your discipline.

Budget and Justification – Please provide a detailed budget and justification of expenses. Budgets should not exceed $1000. The budget may include all normally allowable costs of research with the exception of salary support for the investigators. The budget period may be up to 12 months in duration.

On the day of the event...

Poster set up - 10:30 am - 11:30 am.

Poster presentations - 12:00 - 1:30. The lead author and/or co-authors must be present to answer questions about the work for the full time of the event, but this responsibility can be shared among presenters if time constraints exist in individual schedules.

Awards ceremony - 1:45 - 2:30 pm in the Room G101.

Posters must be removed from the display boards by immediately following the awards ceremony. The display boards will be removed from the Reception Area at 3:00.
